( Details ) Edition Details : Book 2 | Dimensions: 192 Pages | Series Title: A Series of Unfortunate Events | ISBN: 0064407675 Published: September 1999 | Published by HarperCollins Children's Books chapters.indigo Review The second book in A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Reptile Room picks up where The Bad Beginning left off. Saved in the nick of time from the evil machinations of Count Olaf, the Baudelaire orphans find themselves cast out into world once again. But this time, prospects seem brighter: the guardian of choice is a somewhat eccentric but utterly good-hearted herpetologist (that's someone who studies snakes) named Montgomery Montgomery who is glad to receive his unfortunate relations, so much as to have them come along on an exciting expedition to Peru! Of course, as the unapologetically dour author is quick to establish, the Baudelaires are destined to have unhappy endings and so things go downhill from there and pick up a surprising amount of speed. Not to give away the unpleasant events of the story, we will simply say that the prose continues in the same vein as Book the First, quirky and blackly humourous, but always intelligent and challenging. The author's device of false deterrence -- encouraging the reader on the jacket and within to abandon the book in favour of something lighter if they wish -- has exactly the desired effect. What could be so horrible, you wonder? Dare to find out and you'll be pleasantly -- and grimly -- surprised. Ages 9 and up. From the Publisher Dear Reader, If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale. I’m afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don’t be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery. In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the reappearance of a person they’d hoped never to see again. I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket Store Review Tracey from Chapters # 758, Woodbridge, ON Lemony Snicket is a misnomer. He should, more accurately, be called Snicker, as his witty, snarky and facetious style in this second book outstrips the first, A Very Bad Beginning. He goes to the point of outlining all the story's events in the first few pages. Unlike those annoying people who insist upon telling what is going to happen next in the movies, Snicket's spilling of the beans consistently adds to the experience. The orphans, after escaping the evil Count Olaf in the first book, are sent to live with their Uncle Monty who is a reptile researcher. They are quite happy until the evil Count reappears. How the Orphans thwart him is, as usual, unique and wonderful -- just like the book. About the Author Lemony Snicket grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. To his horror and dismay, he has no wife or children, only enemies, associates, and the occasional loyal manservant. His trial has been delayed ,so he free to continue researching and recording the tragic tales of the Baudelaire orphans for HarperCollins. Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.
